  • 2022-2023 J-WAFS Fellow for Water and Food Solutions
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering

James Zhang graduated with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in mechanical engineering and engineering public policy from Carnegie Mellon University in 2019. He spent a summer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory through the SULI program, and received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from MIT in 2021.

James’ research is focused on producing clean drinking water using light-induced evaporation. He plans to experimentally investigate the fundamental properties of how light interacts with brackish water surfaces and affects the heat and mass transfer of evaporation. Through this method he hopes too produce usable water at high energy efficiencies
