Carlos Portela is the Brit (1961) and Alex (1949) d'Arbeloff Career Development Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Professor Portela received his PhD and MS in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, where he was given the Centennial Award for the best thesis in mechanical and civil engineering. He also received degrees in aerospace engineering (BS) and physics (BA) from the University of Southern California. At Caltech, Portela worked under the guidance of Professors Julia R. Greer and Dennis M. Kochmann, to explore the mechanical response of 3D architected materials from experimental and computational perspectives. He joined MIT in August 2020.
